El Refugio Deportation Bag Drive

Some churches in the area are teaming up to collect items for men who are being held/deported at Stewart Detention Center. Over 2,000 men are being held at Steward Detention Center right now and 95% of them will be deported. These men came into the country with little/nothing and are leaving the same way. Although ICE does not allow them to leave with much, they will allow them to receive a deportation bag. Your donations will go directly to these men, through the work of El Refugio.

Items needed* (gently used items are accepted for all except shoes):

  • Backpacks or duffel bags with working zipper

  • Men's pants (Jeans or other casual pants)

  • Shirts (Polo shirts or t-shirts are okay)

  • Socks

  • Underwear

  • Shoes (new shoes are greatly preferred)

  • Shell Gas Cards in increments of $25

*The men receiving these bags tend to be in their 20's and 30's and tend to wear small/medium with some larger sizes. The clothes should be casual and for warm climates.

There is also a Target registry if you would like to purchase items that will be sent directly to El Refugio for distribution!

You can drop your donations in the bin in the Connector anytime before Thursday, August 15 or you can take them directly to Holy Trinity Episcopal in Decatur.
